Neil Lennon has resigned as Celtic’s chairman

Football News

With the club 18 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers, Neil Lennon has resigned as Celtic’s chairman.

After Brendan Rodgers transferred to Leicester in February 2019, Lennon, who returned to manage Celtic for a second time, was under pressure all season but had previously insisted he would not resign.

He apologized for “letting fans down again” after Ross County’s 1-0 loss on Sunday, raising the likelihood of Rangers winning the title at Celtic Park on March 21st.

Assistant John Kennedy of Lennon’s will take interim charge of the side.

Lennon said in a statement on Wednesday: “Because of so many factors, we have experienced a difficult season and, of course, it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to hit the same heights as we did before.”

I’ve been working as hard as ever to try to turn things around, but sadly we haven’t managed to get the kind of run that we needed.

“I have always given the Club my best and have been proud to provide the Celtic supporters with silverware. The Club will always be part of me. I will always be my Celtic supporter and I will always want the best for Celtic.

“I would like to thank so many people at the Club who have given me so much and I would also like to thank my family for their love and support. I wish the Celtic supporters, players, staff, and directors nothing but success for the future.”

Lennon’s departure follows that of chief executive Peter Lawwell, who, after 17 years in June, will leave his position as Celtic chief executive and be replaced by Scottish Rugby’s Dominic McKay.
