Since their League Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2008, the Spurs have not lifted a major trophy, and goals from Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min secured their ninth final appearance in the competition, which they have won four times.
Mourinho, who, after previous triumphs with Chelsea (2005, 2007, 2015) and Manchester United (2017), is chasing his fifth League Cup crown as a player, said there was a clear secret to competition success.
“In 2004, I came to England and I recall… I had to learn, and I still took it seriously, the significance of the cups here. If there is a key, it’s a matter of taking it seriously. According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho told reporters to respect what English football is.
In the band, what I feel is exactly the urge. I’m not saying the attitude of winning, I’m not saying that we are this or that. I’m just saying that we’re honest guys.
Those guys have been playing against Chelsea since the first game, then Stoke City, and now… Have taken it seriously. That’s what I’m aiming to do at Crosby v Marine on Sunday (in the FA Cup third round). Try to be serious, to value your opponents, and to try to advance.”
Tottenham will face Manchester United or Manchester City, who meet in the second semi-final on Wednesday, in the final at Wembley Stadium on April 25.
Eric Dier, the Tottenham defender, said his teammates were desperate for silverware.
“The motivation hasn’t changed since I was here and we wanted to,” Dier told Sky Sports.”
“There’s a lot of football to be played before it starts, but it’s great to be in the first possible final.”
