Morata scores twice to help Juventus to a 3-1 home win over Lazio

Football News

Alvaro Morata scored twice to help Juventus beat Lazio 3-1 at home on Saturday (March 6) and keep their slim hopes of winning the Serie A title alive.

The Bianconeri, who started without Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, was slow to get going and fell behind after just 15 minutes to Joaquin Correa’s third league goal of the season. However, Adrien Rabiot equalized in the 39th minute with their first shot on goal, before Alvaro Morata’s quickfire double after the break – the second from the penalty spot – secured a third win in four Premier League games.

Andrea Pirlo’s team is still in third place, but they’ve closed to within a point of Milan and seven of Inter after the same number of games.

Lazio deservedly took the lead after 14 minutes, after Mohamed Fares and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic had gone close with long-range efforts. Correa cut inside from the left, flipped Merih Demiral inside out, and slotted into the bottom-left corner past Wojciech Szczesny.

As Lazio continued to push, the Juve goalkeeper got down well to repel another Milinkovic-Savic drive, while Morata went wide at the other end.

Morata played in Rabiot, who unleashed an unstoppable drive into the roof of Pepe Reina’s net from an acute angle, bringing Juve level six minutes before the break.

At the start of the second half, Milinkovic-Savic was in the thick of things again, heading against Szczesny’s crossbar from Luis Alberto’s looped ball over the top.

However, it was Juve who scored next, with Alvaro Morata firing past Reina in the 57th minute after being set up by the impressive Federico Chiesa.
