Mohamed Salah calls on world leaders to 'make sure the violence and killing of innocent people stops immediately’

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool footballer, has called on world leaders to “do all in their power” to stop the killing of innocent civilians, in what seems to be a nod to escalating tensions in Palestine, where Israeli attacks have killed at least 36 people, including teenagers.

Salah’s appeal came as the Israeli military began to shell the besieged Gaza Strip on Tuesday, hitting many places after rockets were launched from the territory. After Israeli airstrikes caused a residential building in Gaza City to collapse, Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, launched 130 rockets at Tel Aviv.

Salah directly asked Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a tweet on Tuesday to “ensure the abuse and killing of innocent civilians ends immediately.”

On Twitter, Salah said, “I’m calling on all the world leaders including the Prime Minister of the country. That has been my home for the past 4 years. Do everything in their power to make sure the violence and killing of innocent people stop immediately. Enough is enough.”

The 28-year-old Egyptian footballer was chastised on social media for failing to include Palestine in his post. And for being late to address the subject amid other players speaking out.

Salah has over 14.3 million Twitter followers, and his post was posted thousands of times in a matter of minutes. He tweeted shortly after sharing a photo of himself. The photo was in front of the Dome of the Rock in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian health ministry in Gaza announced on Wednesday that 43 people had died as a result of Israeli strikes in Gaza. Including 13 children. A total of 250 people were injured. In Israel, at least five people have been injured by rocks. At least five Israelis have also died as a result of the Gaza rocket fire.
