Football News

Former Milan star Ronaldinho thanked all for their ‘affection and encouragement following the death of his mother from COVID-19.

Dona Miguelina Eloi Assis dos Santos died over the weekend at the age of 71 of coronavirus-related complications.

Ronaldinho wrote on Instagram, “My family and I thank all of you for the affection and support we have received in this very difficult time. My mother inspired all those who knew her with strength and joy and will continue to shine her light upon our lives forever. We will continue our journey with the strength that she taught us. Thanks to you.”

After she died after complications arising from coronavirus, Ronaldinho was reportedly too stricken with grief to attend his mother’s funeral.

The mother of the Barcelona and Brazilian legend, Miguelina, went to the hospital in December after contracting Covid-19. The 71-year-old passed away on Saturday, but Ronaldinho was too upset to go to the funeral, which was attended by his brother Roberto and his sister Deisi, according to a report in Brazil.

Ronaldinho had blacked out his Instagram profile photo.

A heartfelt message of support via Instagram was posted by Lionel Messi – who was Ronaldinho’s friend and protege when the Argentine was an emerging talent at Camp Nou.

“Ronnie, I have no words. I can’t believe it,” said Messi. “Just sending you a lot of strength and a big hug for you and the whole family. I’m very sorry. Rest in peace.”

Ronaldinho is widely regarded as one of his generation’s greatest players and among the most talented footballers of all time.

The 2005 Ballon d’Or winner won the 2002 World Cup and the 2006 Champions League with Barcelona. For Gremio, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Flamengo, Atletico Mineiro, Queretaro and Fluminense, he played as well.
