Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been speaking about the possible signing of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid, saying he feels the offer is “pretty close”. For Real this season, Odegaard has not featured much and looks set for a loan move to the Emirates. Arteta was speaking after Arsenal won 3-1 in the Premier League against Southampton.
Over the signing of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid, Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal is “very optimistic”.
After searching for chances this season under Zinedine Zidane, Odegaard looks likely to join the Gunners on loan.
Arteta said, after Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Southampton on Tuesday: “I think we’re pretty close, but as I understand it, it’s not finalized.”
“In the last few hours, I haven’t spoken to [technical director] Edu or the club, but we are very confident that we will finalize the deal.”
As Arsenal came from behind to win at St Mary’s, Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka, and Alexandre Lacazette scored.
In their last six Premier League matches, the victory was Arsenal’s sixth, although Saka has now scored four goals in his last six league matches.
“Arteta said about the 19-year-old, “He’s very polite, very respectful and at the same time has the character to claim the ball, to make decisions that are not quite common for his age.
We need the leadership and with his attitude and his performances, he is gaining that.
“Through the season, he was very consistent. We’ve played him in various roles, and he’s very good at adapting. On the right, he seems very relaxed, his connection up playing his great finish is very good.
“He’s assisting players, I think again today, he had a really strong performance.”
Arteta added, reflecting on the performance: “To come here and play the way we played, to respond to the way we played football against a really good side, I think we should be proud overall.”
