Real Madrid Bears Loss By Empty Stadiums
Real Madrid is believed to have lost 15 million euros due to the inability of their supporters to watch matches against Liverpool and Barcelona. Apart from the Madrid derby and a home tie against Inter in the Champions League group stage, Los Blancos have not faced any top sides at home this season.
The first leg of their quarter-final tie against Liverpool at home was expected to pull in around 10 million euros in ticket sales. Saturday night’s match against Barcelona will be less due to season ticket holders but could still bring in around five million euros.
The unfortunate fact for Real Madrid is that these two big matches against Barcelona and Liverpool have netted the club exactly zero euros. The lack of spectators has been the rule in the pandemic, but it is costing football clubs dearly financially.
Real Madrid Penalty Concerns
Before Saturday night’s match against Barcelona, Real Madrid had gone 23 league games without being given a penalty. The most recent penalty was on October 24 at Camp Nou.
Since October, there have been some major penalty screams. Zinedine Zidane’s side has been refused a spot-kick on each occasion.
This is one of the worst penalty droughts since the introduction of VAR. Rayo Vallecano having the longest streak, going 28 games without being given one. Cadiz had a similar 23-game winning streak earlier this season.
