The Scots had a chance to score just before halftime after the Austrian goalkeeper made an error. The Austrian goalkeeper made amends for his error with a spectacular intervention. Before the break, the game was scoreless.
The Austrians made their presence known after the start of the second half. Kalajdzi took a close-range shot in the 55th minute and comfortably put the ball in the net.
The Scots were trailing in the game and wanted to keep on. Stuart Armstrong made no errors just two minutes later. However, the hosts guided to a draw in the 71st minute.
Grant Hanley dashed into the penalty area and converted on a head kick. Kalajdzic made another appearance in the 80th minute. The Austrians took the lead thanks to his attack. This, though, was not the end of the excitement. After five minutes, the score was tied 2:2, and John McGinn was added to the scoring list.
After a dramatic contest, Scotland shares the points with Austria, who would rue losing the lead twice.
Moldova comfortably beat the Faroe Islands in the second contest. The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute thanks to a goal from Ion Nicolaescu.
In the 61st minute, the same player came close to extending the lead but hit the post. Meinhard Olsen’s lucky goal in the final minute gave the Faroe Islands an equalizer.
