With a comfortable victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s side climbed to second as John Stones scored his first goals in the Premier League for Manchester City.
Stones had played 93 Premier League games without a Man City goal, but the in-form center-back produced two very clean finishes in his 94th league outing for the club to help put away a spirited but thoroughly outplayed Palace side.
It took a moment of world-class quality to open the packed defense of the Palace when the lovely cross of Kevin de Bruyne with the outside of his boot put it on the plate for the Stones to go home. The first half was largely dominated by the city.
And the hosts picked up where they left off after the break, totally dominating the game and converting the pressure through the curling strike from range by Ilkay Gundogan and a second penalty-box finish from Stones, while on the scoresheet Raheem Sterling had two minutes remaining.
The results see City leapfrog Spurs, Liverpool and Leicester in the Premier League table, with Guardiola’s side just two points behind league champions Manchester United and a game in hand on the rest of the top five.
Palace’s first loss in four league matches sees them sit 13th in the table, but Hodgson’s first defeat sees them sit 13th in the table.
The side continues to be closer to the Champions League positions than the relegation sector.
