Italy England

Italy beat England in a penalty shootout in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all missed from the penalty spot in a heartbreaking loss. This was England’s first major final in 55 years, the last being the 1966 World Cup. Rashford rolled his shot into the left post while Sancho and Saka had their penalties saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. the goalkeeper was later named Player of the Tournament.

Within two minutes of the start of the game, Luke Shaw had given England the dream start when he rifled a shot into the bottom corner from an inch-perfect Kieran Trippier cross. The wingbacks of England were causing all sorts of problems for the Italians in the early stages of the match. As the match went on, the Italians began to control all the possession and create most of the opportunities as Italy beat England.

They finally made the breakthrough in the 67th minute from a corner. After a scramble in the box, veteran defender Leonardo Bonucci tapped into an empty net. He became the oldest player to score in a European final at the age of 34. He later stepped up to convert for the Italians in the shootout.

Rashford, Sancho, and Saka were inconsolable after their penalty misses with Gareth Southgate consoling the trio. He knows better than anyone that the wound will take time to heal after his euro 1996 miss that eliminated England from the tournament against Germany.
