The visitors’ good start was undone when Tomas Soucek fouled Chris Wood inside the field, and the in-form striker brushed himself down to score. Their lead, however, lasted just two minutes, as Antonio headed home Vladmir Coufal’s superb cross before ghosting through the Burnley defense to poke him a Said Benrahma cross.
West Ham’s 17th league victory of the season – a club record in Premier League history – put them within three points of the top four as they bounced back from defeats to Newcastle and Chelsea.
David Moyes’ team traveled north having lost four of their last eight league games. As many as they did in the previous 23. And facing the possibility of seeing a fruitful season crumble.
However, Antonio’s return after a month out, as well as Benrahma’s results, would raise expectations of a potential top-four finish with four games remaining and Declan Rice on the verge of returning.
David Moyes congratulated the 31-year-old, who is now joint highest-scorer on nine goals with Jesse Lingard and Tomas Soucek. But he refused to comment on his team’s chances of finishing in the top four.
“He was in fantastic form. He’d been training very hard. He deserved his two goals and should have scored another two on another day. We’re struggling to catch up with the best players. I’m not sure if we’ll make the top four. But, with four games remaining, we are unquestionably fighting. There were a lot of interesting points to take away from it. Overall, a great team effort,” said West Ham boss David Moyes.
Though West Ham has its sights set on Europe. Burnley has yet to secure their protection and a sixth consecutive season in the Premier League.
