Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa recently revealed that his lack of English has been the biggest disadvantage of the season. It has proven not to be too much of an issue as Leeds is on the verge of finishing in the top half of the table on their return. Bielsa is the only manager in the Premier League that uses a translator for all his media interviews. He was appointed as the head coach in 2018. Bielsa joked that he finds it tough to communicate in Spanish itself that he chose not to try another language.

“I owe an apology to those who have to listen to me, that I haven’t learned English,” said Bielsa who helped Leeds to promotion after a 16-year wait. “One of my big deficits through my passage in English football is not to be able to communicate in the language that everybody speaks.”

Leeds moved above Arsenal in the Premier League table after a goalless draw against Manchester United. They are unbeaten at home against the ‘Big Six’ of the Premier League. When he was asked how he communicates with his players during match days he brought up the disadvantage.

“One of the bigger tools that a coach has is to transmit his message through his words. One of the things I’ve dedicated the most time to while I’ve been a coach is to be able to speak well.” Leeds United coach Marcelo Bielsa said. “If there’s something I like to do, and it’s taken me a long time, is to the significance and the definition of words and to say in the most simple way, without losing the richness of what I want to say.”

“Because it’s so difficult for me to talk in Spanish, to express my ideas simply and briefly, the decision I took not to do this in another language that wasn’t mine,” he added. “That’s to say, that if I can’t say it in Spanish, how can I be able to say it in English? The first one who doesn’t believe this explanation is me, but it’s my reality.”
