After a 0-0 home draw with Real Sociedad on Thursday, Manchester United eased into the Europa league last 16 after a 4-0 aggregate victory over the Spanish side in their round-of-32 clash. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started striker Marcus Rashford and defender Harry Maguire on the bench with one eye on the Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
Solskjaer said that United was determined to go further than last year when it reached the Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup semifinals, and also lost to Manchester City in the semis of the League Cup this season.
“You remember the loses more than the victories,” BT Sport told the Norwegian.
You’re so close to reaching the semifinals in every sport. We had three of them, and we lost one, so this group knows what it feels like. We want to go on, but we want to do better if you’ve struggled before.
The home side appeared lethargic in the opening 20 minutes, sitting on a comfortable first-leg lead and Sociedad missed a 13th-minute penalty as Mikel Oyarzabal scuffed his spot-kick wide after Daniel James fouled Andoni Gorosabel.
United came to life with a swerving shot from 15 meters as Bruno Fernandes rattled the crossbar while Anthony Martial and James were denied by Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Ramiro.
Shortly after the break, Modibo Sagnan hit the woodwork for Sociedad with a close-range header before United replacement Axel Tuanzebe had a goal disallowed for the foul of Victor Lindelof on Jon Bautista. At the interval, Fernandes made way for Rashford, but United went through the motions in the second half mostly as it sat back and kept the visitor at bay.
