Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has speculated at a team overhaul this summer. Read more Man City News here.
For the third time under Guardiola, the city won the Premier League championship and may win the Champions League to end a memorable season. The focus would then shift to the next campaign, with discussions with players who may be dissatisfied with their positions.
In the Daily Mail, Guardiola is quoted as saying, “There are players who accept one common condition in the squad and there are players who don’t accept it. We have to adapt to that situation. At the end of the season, we’ll find out. We’ll speak to them and be clear with them, and we’ll know what’s best for the players.
Man City Players In The LimeLight
The most high-profile players who have fallen down the pecking order this season are Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte. Central defender Laporte was fantastic during his first two seasons at the club. He won two Premier League titles. He sustained a devastating knee injury at the start of the 2019-20 season. And he has failed to regain his best form.
Because of the resurgence of John Stones and the rise of Ruben Dias, Laporte has spent a lot of time on the bench.
In the current season, Sterling has had an equally difficult time. Under Guardiola, he improved his game to new heights in each of the previous three seasons.
However, in the second half of the season, the England international’s goalscoring touch has abandoned him, and he is no longer a sure starter.
After Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-3 victory over Newcastle on Friday, Guardiola said that the forward could be converted to a number nine. Sergio Aguero set to leave at the end of the season. Guardiola will be taking a risk by going into the new season without an established striker.
Guardiola has proven in the past that he is not afraid to experiment with his combinations and places. But if players like Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund are available, it might be difficult to avoid making an offer.
If Kane or Haaland arrives, Guardiola will deploy his players in their preferred positions, potentially increasing City’s threat. On the other hand, the coach might relish the challenge of winning with square pegs in round holes.
