After being linked to Barcelona for the majority of the summer, Lyon star Memphis Depay said he could finish the season with the Ligue 1 giants.
Depay continues to be linked with a move to Barca, and as his contract at Lyon ends at the end of the season, he may be set to move there on a free basis. His partnership with Ronald Koeman, who coached Depay with the Dutch national team before taking over the La Liga giants this summer, greatly helped the Netherlands international’s ties to Barca.
Depay has scored 21 goals for the Netherlands, having won 59 international caps, including a third-place finish at the 2014 World Cup in Russia.
As they pushed three points clear at the top, Depay scored twice in Lyon’s 3-2 victory over Lens on Wednesday.
Although he is associated with a move, Depay said that rather than leave this month before his contract expired, he could still finish the campaign with Lyon.
“I’m happy here. We have a great team, I like the president, we’ll see what happens,” he told Canal+ after the win on Wednesday.
“In the last four seasons, the president and I know what has happened. Let’s keep going and enjoy my presence. I may be here until the end of the season. Let’s focus on Saturday’s game, let’s be happy, we have a great team.”
This season, only Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe (16) has been directly involved in more goals in Ligue 1 than Depay (14). But no player has created more chances for high-flying Lyon than Depay’s 42.
With only Marseille forward Florian Thauvin (12) and PSG attacker Angel Di Maria (11) having produced more, Depay has created 10 big chances.
The Dutch star initially moved to Lyon in 2017 after competing with Manchester United for a breakthrough.
