Liverpool score 7,000th top flight goal

Football News

It’s too early to say if Liverpool is back on track, but a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United would make Jurgen Klopp and his staff feel a lot better.

They came into the match at Bramall Lane having lost their previous four Premier League matches, but they had no such issues on Sunday night.

Curtis Jones scored the game’s first goal shortly after the break, and Roberto Firmino sealed the win with a deflection off Kean Bryan.

Liverpool’s second goal was their 7,000th in Premier League games on a night when they should have had more except for Aaron Ramsdale’s excellent goalkeeping.

Firmino, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Trey Cantwell were all rejected by Ramsdale.

In the first half, Ramsdale saved attempts by Firmino, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, but was unable to avoid the efforts in the 48th and 64th minutes.

Sheffield United had their opportunities as well and had the ball in the net thanks to a calamitous Ozan Kabak’s own goal, however the goal was disallowed because Oli McBurnie was offside in the build-up.

If Liverpool beats Chelsea at Anfield on Thursday night, they will finish fourth, while the Blades are 15 points from safety.

Following the death of his father Jose in Brazil, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was left out on compassionate grounds.

Adrian made his first Premier League appearance since the Merseyside derby at Everton on October 17 and the Liverpool players wore black armbands in support of Alisson.

Jordan Henderson was also out due to groin surgery, so Nat Phillips took his place alongside Kabak in central defense.
