After sustaining a potentially serious knee injury, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is out of the England squad for their three November internationals.
After suffering the problem in England training on Wednesday, the center-back will undergo further diagnosis on the issue with the medical staff of his club. England manager Gareth Southgate says Joe Gomez was “in a fair amount of pain” after suffering a potentially severe knee injury on Wednesday; center-back is out of the internationals and raises further injury problems for Liverpool.
The full extent of the injury is not yet clear, says Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate, but he was “in a fair amount of pain,” which would certainly trigger severe problems for the champions with mounting injury issues.
“Southgate said,” Since he still has scanned, I can’t tell you how bad it is. What was disturbing was to see he was in a fair amount of pain, and when the accident happened, there was nobody around him.
All we have to do is wait to see what the scans reveal, and we are all optimistic that it will not be what it is. But the situation isn’t healthy. I don’t see him involved with us in the games, that’s for sure. “My immediate thoughts are with him because in the past he’s had some issues with injuries with him. So we’re hoping it’s not going to be a long-term one. So we just need to see.”
Another big injury blow for Liverpool will be a long-term absence for Gomez, who is likely to be without fellow center-back Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury against Everton last month.
