According to Joan Laporta, who claims he’s the only guy who can persuade the club captain to stay at Camp Nou, Lionel Messi has been “repeatedly lied to” by Barcelona.

Ahead of the January transfer deadline, debate about Messi’s future is raging.

When the market reopens, the Argentine will be able to discuss a pre-contract deal with any prospective suitors, with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City reportedly poised to swoop for his signature.

Before making a dramatic U-turn, Messi pressed for a move during the summer, but he is now approaching the final six months of his current contract, and time is running out for Barca to bind a coveted asset down to new terms.

The 33-year-old deserves guarantees of a competitive new project, Ex-Camp Nou President Laporta says, with the current squad considered to be below the requisite level when it comes to winning the game’s most coveted trophies.

The Spanish politician told ESPN, “I am sure Messi wants to continue at Barca,” It will rely on the suggestion made to him by the new president.

He wants to see that the love story Barca had with the Champions League, but which has been on hold in recent years, has a successful squad to reignite.

[The club] lied to him repeatedly and, on top of that, things have not gone as anyone wanted. He’s at a stage in his career where he wants to excel and win championships.

“He cannot keep accepting that other teams win the Champions League and Barca, with Lionel, the best player in the history of the game, do not have a team competitive enough to be able to win it.”

Laporta, who recently declared his candidacy for Barca’s next presidential election in January, claims that he is best positioned to convince Messi that he can see his playing days in Catalonia, having already won his full “trust” during his first club spell.
