In Barcelona, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that something isn’t fine. It could only ever be that way because, having had the worst start since 1971, the team started its season. There are many many explanations why the club is in trouble, and most of them could be put at the feet of Josep Maria Bartomeu, the former president.
The club saw their debt grow to such a degree during his tenure as to leave Barca nearly bankrupt, with the coronavirus pandemic revealing the bad way the board of Bartomeu had gone about their business.
Other problems led to Lionel Messi saying that he wanted to leave the club, and the lack of new signings has had a marked impact on how badly the Catalans perform in most games.
Barca won the match against Levante last weekend thanks to a late Messi hit, but they could easily have lost the balance of play.
The Levante players also noticed just how Barca’s players were disengaged with each other.
A source in the Levante squad told SPORT, “They didn’t even talk to each other on the pitch. Just the minimum for set plays and that was it. You didn’t hear a single thing after the game in the tunnel. Not even a word of satisfaction, because we were defeated. It was an interesting case.”
