With a 3-0 victory at Hertha Berlin on Sunday, Leipzig reduced Bayern Munich’s lead in the Bundesliga to two points.

Marcel Sabitzer, Nordi Mukiele, and Willi Orban’s goals gave the visitors their fifth victory in five league matches to completely capitalize on two matches without a Bayern win.

On Monday, the eight-time defending champions were held 3-3 at home by Arminia Bielefeld, then defeated 2-1 on Saturday at Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the season, twelve rounds remain.

It is good that we are mixing again at the end. “For our Champions League qualification goal, it’s also important to have a bit of peace,” Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann said. “We’ve got to remain focused and try to win our matches.”

After his winter move from Juventus, Sami Khedira made his first start for Hertha, but the former German midfielder was unable to prevent Hertha’s sixth defeat in an eight-game stretch without a victory. Hertha remains dangerously close to the relegation area, with only the goal difference holding it in the playoff spot above Bielefeld. Bielefeld played less than Hertha in the game.

“We’re not panicking,” said Coach Pál Dárdai of Hertha.

In the fifth minute, when Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein got the better of their one-on-one, Hwang Hee-chan was expected to fire the visitors ahead in his first Leipzig start.

With a fair chance for Krzysztof Piatek, Hertha replied. The forward was expected to score on the 20th when Sabitzer lost the ball to Dodi Lukebakio on the sideline, who crossed for what would have been a tap-in. Piatek was shocked to be able to get the ball to his feet and could not manage it. From the rebound, Maximilian Mittelstädt was way off the goal.

Matheus Cunha was crowded off the ball, and when Sabitzer let fly from some 30 meters and saw his swerving shot dip in off the underside of the crossbar on the 28th, Hertha would rue the missed chances.

Before American Tyler Adams won the ball from Hertha substitute Mateo Guendouzi and set up Mukiele for 2-0 in the 71st, Hertha missed some other opportunities.
