Sunderland has completed the signing of Jermain Defoe until the end of the season. Oxford United was the other club interested but the striker decide to return to his former club. He spent two and a half seasons between 2015 and 2017 where he scored 37 goals in his 93 appearances for the club. Sunderland is without a manager after the sacking of Lee Johnson following a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Bolton. They are just two points behind leader Rotherham but owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was quick to act following the result. They take on Doncaster at home where they will be looking to make amends.
“I can’t stop smiling because this is a special move for me for many reasons,” Jermain Defoe said after completing his move to Sunderland. “I’ve had so many messages saying, ‘remember when you said you would come back, as I said that I would one day and when I left, I wasn’t ready to leave. I have a special bond with the fans here and the club is in a fantastic position to get promoted. I want to be a part of more special times here and I’m looking forward to it.”
