Health secretary: There will be no fans at the upcoming Champions League games

Football News

Portugal’s health secretary stated on Monday that “under the current pandemic situation” no fans will be at the up and coming Champions League games in the nation.

UEFA settled on June 17 that the final stages of the 2019-20 Champions League will be held in Lisbon from August 12-23, instead of as originally planned in Istanbul.

“For people in general, and not based on the current pandemic situation,” Antonio Lacerda Sales said when asked about conceivable fan attendance at games in the Champions League.

“We don’t have the foggiest idea of how the pandemic will advance and we will take action according to the development of the pandemic as we have done in different situations. I can’t anticipate what’s to come. Not in this phase.”

At the point when it was announced that the games of the Champions League would be in Portugal, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said that no choice had been made regarding the attendance of the fans.

Portugal had affirmed coronavirus-related deaths in 1568, with 41912 positive cases.

On June 4, the Portuguese League continued, with all the games played behind closed doors.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Champions League rivalry was suspended before finishing the round of 16 in March.

The urban communities of Porto and Guimaraes will stage the round-of-16 matches on Aug. 7-8 in case any of the teams that need to have a game are unable to do as such.

Benfica’s Estadio da Luz and Sporting’s Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon were picked by UEFA from the quarter-finals on to stage Champions League games.
