Haaland could prove to be too expensive for cash strapped FC Barcelona

Football News

Barcelona, as confirmed by the Spanish publication Sport, is connected with a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland. Last season, the Norwegian burst onto the scene, scoring 28 goals for RB Salzburg in 22 games. This form won him a move to Borussia Dortmund in January, where he kept finding the net, bagging 35 goals in 34 appearances in all BVB competitions. This has inevitably drawn interest from all over Europe, with some of the biggest clubs in the world trying to secure the services of the 20-year-old.

Before his transfer to the Bundesliga, Manchester United was closely associated with the Leeds-born forward. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the manager of the Red Devils, had previously worked with a Molde player.

Barcelona, along with the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, is another club rumored to be eyeing Haaland. Once again, Sport associated the Catalan giants with the Norwegian international, alleging that agent Mino Raiola wanted his client to move to Camp Nou.
This season, La Blaugrana has been having problems upfront. In the summer, Luis Suarez left for Atletico Madrid on a free transfer and was not replaced, leaving Martin Braithwaite as the only natural striker for the club.

Although the Dane is sufficiently competent to be a back-up choice, he is not at the level of other world-class forwards seen over the years at Camp Nou.

Consequently, from a sporting point of view, a swoop for Haaland would make a lot of sense. There will be questions, though, on whether the club can afford to sign the striker.

Sport estimates that a fee of EUR 75 million will be needed to remove Haaland from Signal Iduna Park. Barcelona may not be able to stump up this kind of money in one go, having been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also, given the transfer fees floating around in recent years, for a player of Haaland’s pedigree, the estimated EUR 75m figure seems remarkably low.
