Haaland brace and Jadon Sancho’s goal gave Borussia Dortmund all three points

Football News

An Erling Haaland brace and Jadon Sancho’s goal gave Borussia Dortmund all three points on Saturday in an entertaining 3-1 victory away from RB Leipzig.

This game represented a rare chance for these sides to make up ground at the top of the table following the loss of Bayern Munich to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. As such, when they had the ball, they all started at a frenetic pace, each team surging forward in numbers and sprinting back to recover when not in possession.

It made for a breathless spectacle, but as the sides canceled each other out, goalscoring opportunities were few and far between.

In terms of territory, Leipzig just about outstripped their tourists and had the best openings, as they were. Marcel Halstenberg saw a shot blocked from the edge of the field, while the only player to get behind the BVB defense was Tyler Adams, but Manuel Akanji cut out his attempted cross to the unmarked Angelino at the back post.

It was a much more open affair in the second half, and Dortmund gradually started to gain a charge of the proceedings. In a sign of things to come, Marco Reus forced a smart save from Peter Gulacsi from a close angle as the BVB broke forward on the counter-attack.

As Raphael Guerreiro and Sancho fired off target and as Leipzig struggled to deal with wave after wave of black-and-yellow attacks, Haaland had a shot blocked and also hit the crossbar.

When Reus back-heeled Haaland’s cross into Sancho’s path, the pressure took its toll in the 55th minute and the 20-year-old swept home at the back post. After a fluid team pass, Sancho added an assist a short while later, crossing deep for Haaland to power in a header at the far post.

In the closing stages, however, Haaland made sure of the victory, latching on to Reus ‘through-ball before rounding Gulacsi and slotting into the empty net, making the maiden Bundesliga goal of Alexander Sorloth no more than a meager consolation for the hosts in the 90th minute.
