Gundogan would welcome Guardiola as Low successor

Football News

Pep Guardiola of Manchester City is an outside candidate to succeed Joachim Low as Germany’s coach, whom Ilkay Gundogan welcomes. If Joachim Low becomes available, Ilkay Gundogan will welcome the appointment of Pep Guardiola as his replacement.

Low revealed earlier this month that he would leave the national team after the postponed European Championship finals, which are set to begin in June.

Several high-profile names have been tied to the soon-to-be-vacant job, with City manager Guardiola considered an outside candidate.

Gundogan has played the last five seasons at the Etihad Stadium under Catalan, and he is having the best season of his career in terms of goal involvements.

Although the ex-Borussia Dortmund midfielder would like to partner with Guardiola on an international basis, he recognizes that it is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

“I will recruit him directly, but I think it would be impossible because he is not available,” he said at a news conference on Tuesday.

“I’m still not sure I want to be at City without him. Besides, I owe Joachim a lot, and I want him to leave on a high note.”

City is on pace for a quadruple this season, which will be all-time top goalscorer Sergio Aguero’s last at the club.

The Argentina international revealed his exit from the club at the end of the season on Monday, and Gundogan is hoping his teammate will leave on a high note.
