Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, welcomed Thomas Tuchel to the Premier League, calling the newly appointed Chelsea head coach an “exceptional manager”.
On Tuesday, a day after Chelsea sacked Frank Lampard, Tuchel’s appointment at Stamford Bridge was confirmed.
In the Bundesliga, where the German was responsible for Mainz and Borussia Dortmund while the Spaniard was at the helm of Bayern Munich, Guardiola and Tuchel previously went head-to-head domestically.
Guardiola welcomed Tuchel to England after City climbed to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 thrashing of West Brom on Tuesday.
Welcome. He’s an outstanding manager. I’m pretty sure he’s going to succeed. He told a news conference, “Welcome. He’s an exceptional manager. I’m pretty sure he will have success. Happy to see him here in this country,”
I played against him at Mainz when I was at Bayern Munich. He did an excellent job at Dortmund in the last season, the way Dortmund played was outstanding. We struggled a lot to win the title like Bayern Munich.
“He’s a friend of mine and I’m happy to see him.”
In 2016-17, Tuchel won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund, while he guided PSG to two Ligue 1 titles, a Coupe de France and a Coupe de la Ligue, as well as a Champions League final last season, before being sacked in December.
On Wednesday, Chelsea, who are 10th in the league, are in play, hosting Wolves.
