Trent Alexander-Arnold has been dropped from England’s squad by Gareth Southgate because he “hasn’t been at the same level” in recent years.

The Liverpool full-back has been left out of the Three Lions squad for this month’s qualifiers against San Marino, Albania, and Poland for the 2022 World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold remains one of the Premier League’s best stars, but his disappointing form has combined with the Reds’ slip to sixth place in the table.

Southgate explained to James Pearce, “I don’t believe he’s played at the level he’s been at in the last few years. He’s a huge talent, and I’m confident he’ll play a significant role for England in the future.”

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins are also first-team call-ups. Jesse Lingard returns after a fruitful loan spell at West Ham United, as does Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.

Jordan Pickford, Jordan Henderson, and others are notable absentees due to injury.
