Gareth Southgate: FA

Mark Bullingham, the FA Chief Executive revealed that they want Gareth Southgate to extend his stay beyond the World Cup. He also maintained that this was regardless of the result against Germany in the Round of 16. Southgate has led England to the world cup semi-finals in 2018 as well as a third-place finish in the Nations League the following year. Southgate will look to win Euro 2020 this year but first faces a major test against Germany in the round of 16.

“Am I enjoying the football? Yes, I am,” FA Chief Executive Bullingham said about England and Gareth Southgate. “Gareth has done a brilliant job, finishing top of the group, really solid defense, and he’s done really well on and off the pitch, in every aspect. Our support is unwavering. 100 percent unwavering. Unwavering support. We are 100 percent behind Gareth. He knows how we feel about him.”

“We feel he is brilliant, both on and off the pitch. We want him to carry on. He’s doing a great job. Regardless of Tuesday. Absolutely.” he added. “Regardless of the group stage of the tournament we would have wanted him to carry on, not just in (this) tournament but if you look at Nations League as well, he did brilliantly in that. I remember the Spain game (the 3-2 Nations League win in October 2018) – absolutely great performances.”

Southgate currently has a contract taking him to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Bullingham hopes that he would extend his contract and formal talks will begin after Euro 2020. He believes that given his skillset, the former defender could be successful anywhere.

“We would love him to carry on, for sure, beyond this contract,” he added. “Gareth knows exactly how we feel about him,” he said. “He knows that we think he’s doing a great job and we’d like him to carry on.”
