James Collins scored the all-important winner after coming off the bench as Cardiff City secured one of the close football scores of the weekend in the Championship. Preston dominated the first half after scoring in the second minute of the game through Sean Maguire. They missed a number of chances to double their lead before the break but failed to capitalize. They were paid to rue the missed chances as Cardiff City looked a completely different side after the break. They equalized shortly after the restart through Mark McGuinness before Collins scored the winner in the 66th minute.
Managers Reaction
Preston’s Frankie McAvoy: “We did not defend our box well enough in the second half. Set plays are a big thing for Cardiff. We worked on it, we set it up to defend our box well. The first half we did it, the second half they brought on James Collins and that changed it for them a bit. They started to put a bit of directness towards our goal and we conceded two set-plays.”
Cardiff’s Steve Morison: “I spoke to him on Thursday and said to him ‘I know you are desperate to start’. I could see him making an impact, so I would rather bring him on and see the game out than start him and bring the younger lads on at the death to see the game out. It worked – the conversations are good. You let them know exactly what you are thinking at the plans.”
