Tony Watt got on the scoresheet for the third game in a row as they earned a 1-0 win despite going down to 10 men. His 34th-minute goal ensured one of the surprising football scores of the weekend. Dundee was close before the goal with Paul McMullan hitting the bar but largely did not trouble the goalkeeper too much. With just two of their 13 shots on target, Dundee will be looking to sign Leigh Griffiths from Celtic as soon as possible.
Jake Carroll received his marching orders in the 78th minute to pile up the pressure on Motherwell. But the new league leaders held their nerve to move above Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership table.
Motherwell boss Graham Alexander: “That was a resilient performance, we weren’t at our best, so we had to be hard to beat and protect our goal.” he added. “We scored a great goal from a set piece and it became the deciding factor.”
Dundee boss James McPake: “We created enough chances. I thought we were very fluent, particularly in the first half, we were causing them all sorts of problems.” he added. “It was a poor goal for us to lose. We did a lot of work on set-plays all week because we felt that’s where they could hurt us most. But I’m extremely proud of what the players gave out there and on another day you win that game pretty comfortably because, I think everybody will be in agreement with me here, the better team lost that game. But it doesn’t matter, Motherwell have got the points, fair play to them.”
