Derby County was on the right side of one of the unexpected football scores in the Championship this week. Wayne Rooney’s side ended their nine-game winless run with a narrow victory against Hull. Sam Baldock scored on debut for the club with a predatory strike with little less than an hour on the clock. Derby County has become a bogey club for Hull in recent times, with the latter losing five of their last six meetings.
Derby dominate the first half and showed a lot of energy all over the pitch. Kamil Jozwiak and Louie both dragged their efforts wide before Ravel Morrison lifted a long-range strike over the crossbar. The Rams kept at it and were rewarded in the 57th minute when he pounced on a rebound from the left post.
Hull’s Grant McCann: “We were not ourselves tonight.” he added. ”We were very safe and didn’t pass the ball or break the lines quickly enough. We didn’t look threatening and we know that we are. We also know there will be games this season when that happens, but then at the very least, you have to come away with a 0-0. We didn’t because we conceded a sloppy goal from a mistake.”
Derby’s assistant manager Liam Rosenior: “They were both outstanding.” he added. ”The pleasing thing from our point of view was that we worked with them in pre-season. They know what we want and how we want to play. Jags has obviously played with Wayne and Wayne trusts him and I was fortunate to play with Sam and, even if he’s not scoring, he does the unselfish, horrible stuff.”
