Lee Bowyer and his Birmingham side continued their good run of form with one of the comfortable football scores in the Championship by beating Derby County 2-0. Scott Hogan opened the scoring for the Blues after a defensive mixup for Derby at the back. Jeremie Bala then sealed victory for the hosts in the 81st minute with a powerful finish.
Troy Deeney made his second debut for Birmingham when he came on midway through the second half. Deeney joined from Watford last month and came on to a wonderful response from the home fans. Birmingham has moved up to fourth with the win while Derby County remains perilously close to the relegation zone in 16th.
Birmingham’s Lee Bowyer: “It was very satisfying to get our first three points at home in front of the fans. [We kept] a clean sheet, created chances, worked extremely hard as a group – it was very pleasing.” he added. “We had to adjust the press slightly after the first few minutes and once we adjusted then we won it in some dangerous areas a lot of times in the first half and should have punished them more, I felt. I thought that we were very good.”
Derby’s Wayne Rooney: “It was frustrating, really. We played some OK stuff, but we didn’t really create that many clear-cut chances.” he added. “On the other hand, I don’t think Birmingham did enough to win the game – we gave the ball away twice for their two goals. We weren’t at our best tonight and didn’t deserve to win.”
