Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr scored a brace each as Chelsea produced one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Champions League. After their narrow WSL win over Aston Villa, manager Emma Hayes wanted her team to be more relentless in front of goal and the team answered her in the best possible way. They came out of the blocks firing by scoring five goals in the first 20 minutes.
Melanie Leupolz opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Fran Kirby doubled their lead in the 16th minute. Sam Kerr then scored both her goals three minutes between each other to put the game firmly to bed. Kirby then scored her second of the game in the 28th minute before Jessi Fleming scored the fifth before halftime. Guro Reiten completed the route in the 49th minute.
“This is a special person in our environment. The work she has done and the work the medical team and my technical team have done with her, it was emotional for her,” Hayes said. “She is a Rolls Royce of a footballer. When she came on there was the composure and I said to Jess Carter to watch her, look at her decision-making in possession and out of possession.”
“She is a superb football player and we’re delighted she is back. She is a quiet leader and has been the mother hen of this group for several years. The ability to read things you can’t teach.” she added.
