Romelu Lukaku and Mateo Kovacic scored their first goals at the Bridge in one of the expected football results in the Premier League. They moved to second in the Premier League table, behind Manchester United only on goal difference. Kovacic was the chief architect for Lukaku’s first goal when he put the Belgian through on goal by threading the needle. He then scored when he capitalized on a poor back pass by Tyrone Mings. Lukaku then scored his second with an emphatic strike with almost the last kick of the game.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel: “It was absolutely not comfortable. We played against a strong, strong Aston Villa side. They were well prepared. They looked very sharp and confident from the start and they caused us a lot of problems, especially in the first half.”
Aston Villa boss Dean Smith: “I’m frustrated with the scoreline but football is about moments and we didn’t take our moments today. I feel with the squad I have available to me, with the quality of the squad and the athleticism we have, we can go and ask questions of these clubs and I thought we did that in the first half. The second goal took a lot of wind out of our sails. But there were a lot of positives, there’s a lot of belief in this group.”
