Defending Champions Portugal head into Euro 2020 full of confidence after they won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019. Portugal has never failed to reach the quarter-finals since the restructured tournament in 1996. Since then they have reached the semi-finals on three occasions as well as two finals.
Goalkeeper: Rui Patricio
Rui Patricio was in sublime form when Portugal broke their major trophy drought in 2016. He is one of the few remaining survivors from that team. Patricio made 21 saves while keeping four clean sheets in the seven games. His form has been mixed with Wolves in the Premier League.
Defender: Ruben Dias
Ruben Dias was unarguably the best defender in the 2020/21 Premier League. He formed a formidable partnership with John Stones at the back to help Manchester City to the title. Dias will be defending on the front foot for Portugal with his veteran partner Jose Fonte sitting back to mop up.
Midfielder: Bruno Fernandes
Although Portugal has always favored the defensive approach, Bruno Fernandes is going to be the key to their Euro 2020 fortunes this summer. He has had an unbelievable season with Manchester United. Although he has not been as prolific with the national side, he remains one of the most important players on the Portugal side.
Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo
Even at 36 years old, Ronaldo is one of the most lethal forwards on the planet, rapidly approaching 100 goals for Juventus in less than three seasons since joining from Real Madrid, firing the Old Lady to back-to-back scudettos in the process. He might not be as mobile as he once was, but Ronaldo still has a deceptive turn of pace.
