Erling Haaland’s remarkable UEFA Champions League scoring record helped Borussia Dortmund to a comeback victory

Football News

The phenomenal UEFA Champions League scoring record of Erling Haaland helped Borussia Dortmund to a comeback victory in Seville as the German club took an important step in four years towards the first quarter-final.

For the first time in three years in the round of 16, Seville was soon out of the pits, with Suso’s shot deflecting in the seventh minute off Mats Hummels. Dortmund needed some inspiration and found it 12 minutes later, before Haaland took center stage again, through Mahmoud Dahoud’s fine curling equalizer.

Before Sevilla lost the ball in midfield and Marco Reus played in Haaland to slot under Bounou, the Norwegian first exchanged passes with Jadon Sancho and beat goaltender Yassine Bounou to the return ball to give the visitors the lead. It was his eighth goal in the competition this season and made him the top scorer.

Throughout the second half, the home side pushed for a way back into the game, but an Óscar Rodríguez free-kick against the woodwork was all they could gather before the replacement’s set-piece from the left was volleyed in by another replacement, Luuk de Jong, to give Seville hope for the second leg.

“His two fantastic goals were powerful and taken perfectly. His runs were powerful and all of his movements caused a threat. A great first-half performance gave Dortmund the win. His hard work to help the midfield in the first half was positive. This result wouldn’t have happened without him.”

In recent weeks, Seville had looked so solid, entering this game on the back of seven straight clean sheets, but the defensive wall fell in the first half of the game, which was extremely damaging. For all the defensive excellence of Dortmund (as Julen Lopetegui stressed beforehand), his players gave them too much room and paid for the third goal by giving the ball away cheaply.
