Manchester United have confirmed that Ed Woodward has resigned and will step down at the end of the year. The club announced just before the six Premier League clubs withdrew from the proposed European Super League. There was uproar from all corners of the football world. Woodward joined Manchester United in 2005 and has been in his current role since 2012. Woodward was meant to resign at the end of the year but the announcement has been brought forward.

“I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years,” said Woodward. “The club is well-positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.”

“I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club’s culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing,” he added. “We have invested more than £1bn in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.”

Woodward had a significant part to play in discussions regarding a revamped 36 team UEFA Champions League. But then once the European Super League was announced, Woodward stepped down from his role in Uefa’s Professional Football Strategy Council. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin revealed that Woodward was “very satisfied” with the reforms before leaving his role. He revealed that Woodward wanted to discuss Financial Fair Play but it was apparent he had “signed something else”.

Manchester United owners have announced that the agreement was amicable and there was no bad blood with Ed Woodward. “On behalf of everyone at United I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for his tireless work and dedication,” said Joel Glazer. “His contribution to the club has been massive, and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a part of the Manchester United family.”
