Dean Henderson is expected to play several games in the absence of David de Gea

Football News

In the absence of David de Gea, United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is expected to play several games in the first team.

Henderson was informed before Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace that he should prepare for the possibility of starting United’s next six games, according to the MEN.

This season, the 23-year-old has mostly started in cup competitions, with De Gea becoming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Since the Spanish goalkeeper was unavailable for the trip to Palace due to personal reasons, Henderson is expected to play a significant role in Solskjaer’s side in the coming weeks, including a trip to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Henderson could play in Sunday’s Manchester derby at City, the Europa League round-of-16 first-leg visit of AC Milan next Thursday, and the Premier League visit of West Ham on Match 14. De Gea, 30, missed the Palace game due to personal reasons.

The return leg against Milan on March 18 and the FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester four days later is United’s final two games this month. So far this season, Henderson has appeared in all five FA Cup and Europa League games.

If Henderson starts at City, it will be the first time in United’s history that he has started consecutive league games. So far this season, the England international has made 13 starts.
