On an 18-month loan arrangement, subject to foreign clearance, Crystal Palace signed Jean-Philippe Mateta with an option to make the transfer permanent.
With 10 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this season, Paris-born Mateta, 23, was impressive in the German Bundesliga for Mainz.
Before a big move to seven-time champions Lyon, he started his professional career in the French third-tier. Mateta moved to Mainz after excelling on loan with Le Havre, where he established himself as a regular in the German top-flight, scoring 27 goals in 71 games in total, including during this campaign a hat-trick against SC Freiburg.
Mateta was part of the French team on the international stage that reached the last four of the Under-21 European Championships in 2019, scoring the semi-final opening goal.
After signing with Palace, Mateta said, “I’m very pleased to be coming to Crystal Palace, and I look forward to training.” When I was a child, playing in the Premier League was my dream. Now that I can play, I’ll show the Crystal Palace fans what I can do.
Steve Parish, Chairman of the Club, said: “We have been following the development of Jean-Philippe with keen interest for some time, and I am so pleased that we were able to bring him to South London.”
“He is a player with a proven goal-scoring record that is full of potential, and his signing reiterates our commitment to ensuring we have a well-balanced squad for the seasons ahead in terms of youth and experience.”
