Cristiano Ronaldo declines to exchange shirts with Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens, leaving him “absolutely blushed and embarrassed.”
Gosens, 26, admitted that owning the 36-year-old Juventus star’s jersey had been a lifetime ambition, and he didn’t miss the chance to inquire after a game. But the German international was taken aback when Ronaldo flatly refused his offer, claiming that he “didn’t even look at me.”
Gosens recalled in his biography Dreams are Worthwhile: “After the game against Juventus, I attempted to realize my dream of owning a [Ronaldo] jersey.
I went to him after the final whistle, having not yet gone public to toast but Ronaldo refused. ‘Can I have your shirt, Cristiano?’ I inquired. He didn’t even look at me; all he said was, ‘No!'”
According to Goal, Gosens publicly acknowledged that the failed shirt swap left him feeling “small.”
The German full-back maintained that the “embarrassing” moment was something he wished no one had seen, acknowledging that it was “what I thought and wanted to conceal.”
“I was blushed and embarrassed,” Gosens said. I walked away feeling small. You know when something humiliating happens and you turn around to see if someone noticed?” That’s how I felt and tried to conceal it.”
Despite Juventus’ struggles in defending their Serie A crown, Ronaldo has been in fine goalscoring form this season, scoring 31 times in 35 appearances.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner saved a point for the reigning Italian champions in a 2-2 draw with Torino on Saturday at the Olimpico di Torino.
However, Ronaldo squandered a golden chance to clinch the lead over Torino, as Juventus’ title defense dwindles.
The Portugal captain is set to return to play in Juventus’ Serie A match against Napoli on Wednesday at the Allianz Stadium.
