In Juventus’ 3-1 win over Sassuolo on Sunday, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the third goal and thus became the club and country’s joint-highest scorer in the history of the game. Ronaldo equaled Josef Bican, the Austrian-Czech striker who played between 1931 and 1955, with 759 career goals. The Portuguese icon edged past former Brazilian great Pele’s record of 757 official goals in the first week of the year. Lionel Messi, a long-time rival of Ronaldo, is in fifth place.
The 34-year-old is now on the verge of probably his proudest accomplishment to date. To become the highest scoring player ever, he needs just one more objective.
