Chelsea’s victory over Everton strengthens top-four hopes

Football News

Chelsea defeated Everton with a goal in each half to retain Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start as Blues manager.

The hosts took the lead after Kai Havertz’s shot deflected off Toffees defender Ben Godfrey.

After England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a fine save to deny Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, Havertz thought he had scored, but he had handled the ball before scoring.

After Pickford brought down Havertz, the hosts increased their lead with a Jorginho penalty.

Chelsea is fourth in the Premier League and the last Champions League qualification position, three points behind third-placed Leicester and four behind second-placed Manchester United. This victory also places Chelsea four points clear of Everton in the fifth position, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side – who have a game in hand – sliding to sixth if West Ham wins their late game against Leeds.

Chelsea hasn’t lost since a 2-0 defeat at Leicester on January 19, in Frank Lampard’s final game as manager, and Tuchel hasn’t lost in his first 11 games in charge.
