Chelsea: Liverpool are the acid test for title credentials

Chelsea: Liverpool

Arsenal legend Paul Merson feels that their weekend match against Liverpool will be a true test of Chelsea title credentials. Chelsea travel to Anfield to take on fellow title contenders Liverpool with both teams winning their first two games of the Premier League season. The biggest tussle will be between Virgil Van Dijk and Chelsea’s new record signing Romelu Lukaku. The former scored in his second debut against Arsenal last weekend.

“This is such a fascinating game, one which provides both teams with the chance to make a statement. It’s massive,” Paul Merson said before Chelsea take on Liverpool at Anfield. “Romelu Lukaku has undoubtedly improved Chelsea, but the acid test for their title credentials will be the Liverpool game.”

“What I saw from Arsenal on Sunday at the Emirates was everything you shouldn’t do against Lukaku from a defensive sense, that won’t happen again at Anfield. People say Jurgen Klopp doesn’t change his way, but he will have to change something.” he added. “He will have to put something in front of the defence because if Chelsea are allowed to keep rolling the ball into Lukaku on the edge of the box he will hurt them eventually.”.

“You’ve got Virgil van Dijk who is a Rolls Royce of a player,” Merson added. “Will Lukaku go and pick Van Dijk to play on? I don’t think so. “That is what Chelsea will have to do – try and take Van Dijk out of the game – but Van Dijk is so cute and will just come around Lukaku if he is being pinned. Van Dijk’s pace allows Liverpool to take that risk of playing higher safe in the knowledge he will deal with that ball over the top.”
