Chelsea 2 – 0 Newcastle United: Timo Werner scored after 100 days

Football News

In the 24th round of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea footballers defeated Newcastle 2-0 with goals from Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner. Throughout the game, Thomas Tuchel’s team was a stronger competitor, scoring both goals in the first half. In the 31st minute, after Newcastle goaltender Karl Darlow blocked Tim Werner’s cross on his knee, Olivier Giroud put them in the lead. Instead of the wounded Tammy Abraham, Giroud joined the match 11 minutes earlier. Werner set up the final 2-0 just eight minutes after that. The German, who ended his 100-day drought with a goal, i.e. 1000 minutes played without a goal in the Premier League, happily bounced one corner kick from Lascelles off.

The one most thought about, however, is Mateo Kovačić. A brilliant game was played by a Croatian national team player who dominated the middle of the field. He was unmistakable with the ball in his feet and he took 11 of the 13 duels as well. He was probably the best-rated player on the field with such an output. He completely justifies the confidence of Thomas Tuchel, who, since he was on the Chelsea bench, has ranked him in the first 11 in all Premier League matches.

In the standings, Chelsea moved to fourth place with a win and missed Liverpool. They are four points behind third-placed Leicester and in the fifth position, they have the same number of points as West Ham. With 25 points, Newcastle remains in 17th position, and Fulham came close to seven points behind with a win over Everton on Sunday.
