As Casemiro’s header and Karim Benzema’s eighth league goal of the season secured a 2-0 victory over Granada, Real Madrid climbed level on points with Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga on Wednesday.
On several occasions, Granada presented problems for Zinedine Zidane’s team, but their lack of completion cost them dearly.
Real started to push their advantage after a goalless first half and the introduction of Marco Asensio for the injured Rodrygo increased the pace for the home side.
As Toni Kroos’ shot rebounded off the post, Real came close and goalkeeper Rui Silva fired over before Benzema.
Real was ahead less than a minute later when Casemiro strongly headed 57 minutes into Asensio’s cross.
Three minutes into injury time, before firing home a low shot to wrap up the points, Benzema dribbled around the field.
‘That makes it six wins in a row, but we had to fight for them,’ said Zidane. “When things are complicated, I’ll take the criticism but when it’s like tonight, you have to enjoy it.”
The Frenchman clarified that although Eden Hazard, who had been sidelined with a thigh injury since the end of November, was among the replacements, he did not want to threaten the Belgian.
“Little by little he’ll work his way back into the team,” Zidane said.
True, visiting Elche for their final match of 2020 on 30 December, will be anxiously awaiting the results of tests on Rodrygo, who after gripping his hamstring was stretched off the pitch.
