Butragueño: “We weren’t lucky with referee Hernandez “

Football News

Emilio Butragueo, a former Real Madrid player who is now the club’s spokesman, spoke to Movistar+ after the Madrid Derby, which ended 1-1 after some dispute with the referee.

Even though the assistant referees in charge of the VAR advised him to go see the replay on the television, Hernandez opted not to call a penalty for Real Madrid.

“In the first half, there is a play that ends up being decisive; the process of it all, I believe, is correct; VAR instructs Hernandez to review the replay and make the appropriate decision. We assume it is a penalty because the ball hits his hand. We weren’t fortunate with Hernandez Hernandez again, he makes the decision,” Butragueo said.

The former player went on to clarify how that decision jeopardized Real’s chances of securing a vital victory.

“The ball strikes his side, and we can all agree on that. From our perspective, it is a punishment, but the decisions must be made by experts. We don’t want to say anything more, which is unfortunate because it was a crucial moment in the game that might have resulted in an equalizer and a new second-half strategy. What else is there to say?

Butragueo concluded, ‘I insist, the referee goes, VAR tells him to go, we think that’s the way it’s supposed to be and that the referee has to make a decision, but we weren’t lucky.'”

Zinedine Zidane, the coach, declined to comment on that particular play. Real Madrid remains five points behind Atletico Madrid, who has a game in hand.
