When asked about the mentality toward the women’s squad in 2010, when he started his four-year tenure in charge of the female field and the B team, Jordi Mestre, the club’s former vice-president, laughs.

Barcelona will play in their second UWCL final in three seasons this weekend. After losing the first of those, there is sincere optimism that they will beat Chelsea on Sunday. This legendary club’s success in the women’s game can be traced back several years, with their first Primera Division title in 2012 being a watershed moment.

However, they would prove to be a force for progress as they became Spanish champions for the first time and graced the Champions League for the first time.

Mestre suggested making the women’s team professional three years later when the trophies started to flood in, and the club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, backed him up.

“Barca has always been ahead of the curve and has always considered how to have a positive effect on society,” Maria Teixidor, who took over the women’s team in 2015, tells Goal.

The events that followed appeared to only bolster the team’s position. The women’s team will travel to the United States with the men’s team, and a contract with Stanley was signed, which the club described as the largest jersey sponsorship deal for a women’s team to date.

Strangely, no championships were won in the four seasons that followed the professionalism, even though the team had been declared champions for four years in a row.

Mestre explains it as a “time of transformation” during which persistence was essential, but it wasn’t the only factor that contributed to the current level of performance.

Recruiting Of The Team

Recruiting was outstanding during those four years. Sixteen of Barcelona’s current players were signed between 2015 and 2019. The result was a team that was evenly matched and well-blended.

Others have progressed through the system and represent Barcelona. Such as Melanie Serrano, Spanish players who have been known as good suits for the style from a young age. And such as Patri Guijarro, and international stars, such as Caroline Graham Hansen.

All of this is complemented by an enthralling community of young people who are graduating from the academy.

Idol Mentor

Everything that remained was to find the ideal mentor.

Fran Sanchez was fired in January 2019. The rare occurrence in Spain sparked outrage in the media. Lluis Cortes was appointed in his place.

Barcelona did something surprising and unexpected under Cortes. They were in the Champions League final four months after he was appointed.

With an 8-0 victory over Glasgow City, Sanchez had put them in the quarter-finals. Wins over Lillestrom of Norway and Bayern Munich saw them continuing their impressive journey.

The expectation, on the other hand, has improved. After being big underdogs two years ago, the atmosphere in Barcelona this weekend is different.
