Ronald Koeman’s side is within striking distance of La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. With some crucial fixtures remaining in the championship race, but minds have already turned to next season. The club is also juggling its budgets. Koeman has to offload some players to relieve the pressure and make room in the budget for future new arrivals.
With Memphis Depay, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Eric Garcia all rumored to be on their way, the careers of some current Barcelona stars are in jeopardy.
Nine players on sale
Philippe Coutinho is the player Barcelona’s executives want to get rid of the most. Things haven’t gone well for Coutinho at Barcelona, but the club can’t seem to get rid of him permanently. Under Koeman, the Brazilian was offered another chance, but his season has been disrupted by injuries, and he will now miss the rest of the season.
Barcelona already owes a considerable sum to Liverpool for his 2018 move and is eager to clear the debt as quickly as possible. However, generating interest in the midfielder could be challenging, with an initial loan transfer being the more possible choice.
Braithwaite was the most random Barcelona transfer in recent memory, and he was only really really considered as a back-up, but he has done the club well. Koeman has used him regularly, and he has contributed seven goals this season. However, since his role has mostly been as a backup, he will be given less of a chance in the future, with Koeman willing to listen to any offers for the Dane.
Umtiti, who was once a mainstay of the Barcelona squad, has failed to keep down a first-team spot in recent seasons, and his departure seems to be long overdue.
The center-back has made only 13 starts this season, which has been hampered by an injury at the start of the season. He has seen more action in recent months, but the imminent arrival of Eric Garcia would also reduce his prospects, and Umtiti is one of the players who could be quickly offloaded for a reasonable fee.
Dembele’s name has just a question mark next to it. His future is entirely dependent on whether or not he signs a new deal.
The winger’s tenure at the club has been tough, to say the least, but he has shown the attributes that convinced Barcelona to pay more than £100 million for him this season.
Man United is rumored to be interested in signing Dembele, though Italy is also interested. Dembele is yet to express his thoughts.
Another move that left everyone scratching their heads, Barcelona’s decision to let young prospect Arthur go in exchange for Pjanic (now 30) exemplifies the club’s recent management style.
Pjanic has not been as influential as he would have liked. He should have been a natural fit for the team. This season, the Bosnian has made 28 starts, but just 12 of them have been as a starter.
Roberto, the hero of Barcelona’s famous comeback against PSG in 2017, looks to be leaving the club on his terms.
Sergino Dest’s arrival and the rise of Oscar Mingueza have closed down the right-back role, while Koeman has used Roberto sparingly in midfield, with just 12 appearances this season.
The Spaniard is out of contract next summer. He will be a good bargain for any interested clubs. Barcelona will be able to recoup some much-needed funds from his selling.
Other clubs have shown a strong interest in Junior Firpo. Firpo, once regarded as one of La Liga’s brightest defensive stars. He has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Barcelona. Jordi Alba, 32, continues to rule the roost at left-back. Considering his advanced age, Koeman is willing to let backup choice Firpo go.
