On Wednesday, Barcelona needed extra time to reach the Copa del Rey final, beating Sevilla 3-2 on aggregate just two days after a police raid on the club and the arrest of their former president. After falling behind 2-0 in the first leg, Danish international Martin Braithwaite scored the game-winning goal with a diving header off a Jordi Alba cross in the fifth minute of extra time. Gerard Pique had equalized in practically the last action of the game in the fourth minute of stoppage time to save Barca.
After a fine cross from Antoine Griezmann, the veteran international headed in at the near post.
That was after Ousmane Dembele gave the 30-time Spanish Cup winners a 12th-minute lead in the second leg with a right-footed drive from outside the city, after scoring in the weekend’s 2-0 win at Sevilla in La Liga.
In the 73rd minute, Sevilla had a chance to seal the game and deny Barca a spot in the final for the 42nd time.
When Lucas Ocampos was taken down by Oscar Mingueza, they were awarded a sentence.
Ocampos’ tame right-footed attempt from the spot, however, was saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
In injury time, Sevilla was reduced to ten men after Brazilian Fernando was sent off for a foul on Francisco Trincao.
“The team deserved to qualify,” Ronald Koeman, Barca’s coach, said.
“For their hard work and integrity.” We’ve been more competitive, we’ve always built opportunities, and the team has vastly improved.
“This is a significant outcome for the club, the players, and, of course, myself.” This is a crucial step toward obtaining a title.”
After former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, currently, chief executive Oscar Grau, head of legal services Roma Gomez Ponti, and Bartomeu’s advisor Jaume Masferrer were arrested by Catalan police on Monday morning, it was a much-needed victory for Barcelona.
They were all interrogated concerning the “Barcagate” controversy from last year.
The club’s presidential elections will take place later this week.
Barcelona’s stadium was searched as part of an investigation into claims that the club engaged in a smear campaign against current and former players who were critical of Bartomeu.
