Aston Villa Keinan Davis’ struck late to deny West Brom a crucial three points in their fight to stave off relegation. West Brom gave a good account of themselves after a disappointing performance against Leicester on Thursday.
Aston Villa went 1-0 up after just nine minutes when Semi Ajayi brought down Ross Barkley in the West Brom penalty area. Anwar El Ghazi stepped up for Aston Villa to slot the penalty past Sam Johnstone in the West Brom goal. Erik Konsa then clipped Ainsley Maitland -Niles feet with Matheus Pereira stepping up to score.
Mbaye Diagne then capitalized on a mistake by Ezri Konsa. Diagne’s low cross was then turned in by Tyrone Mings for an own goal. Davis capitalized on miscommunication in the Baggies defense to equalize with barely any time left on the clock.
“I do think it’s the least we deserve – I think it would have been a travesty if we’d lost that game today, especially to a farcical penalty decision and an own goal,” Smith said. “I thought we started the game really well, controlled the ball, controlled possession, and got into really good areas of the pitch and created opportunities. Our finishing probably let us down a little bit and we had to wait for that sub to get the equalizer in the end.”
“I can’t praise the players enough. They’ve done it against all the odds, recovered from a disappointing Thursday result… But my players were absolutely fantastic.” Allardyce said. “We had the chances to get the third, of course, and because we didn’t do that and the late slip up in the last minute, them throwing everything in the box and everybody up, we paid the price.”
